Minister Visits Hawkins Creek in Yahk
to look at potential flooding problems
The Liberal Government of BC in an unprecedented move has become proactive with the issue of flooding and property protection throughout the province. For the first time in 30 years money and emphasis for preventative measures prior to flooding events is being offered throughout the province as a mandate from the Liberal Government. Solicitor General John Les at the request of MLA Bill Bennett and RDCK Director John Kettle stopped in Yahk as part of his tour throughout the Kootenay’s to look at the potential problems facing residents from a possible breaching of the dike located on Hawkins Creek.
After viewing the site with local resident Rod Yaremkewich, Public Affairs Officer Brent Shepard, Minister Les assured Director Kettle he would be in contact with Provincial Emergency staff in Nelson to immediately look into the problems facing Yahk.
Director Kettle has reported that one day after the visit from the Minister he was contacted by PEP (Provincial Emergency Program) staff in Nelson and potential remediation talks for the dike on Hawkins Creek are underway with the province. He noted that Regional PEP Coordinator Al Bond of Nelson was very helpful in pushing toward a solution for Hawkins Creek. Our RDCK Director will report back as soon as information and remediation plans for the Hawkins Creek dike are finalized.
