Vision Statement for Area
North Canyon Improvement District
Sponsored by... RDCK Area B Tourism, Economic Development & Communications Society

North Canyon Improvement District is responsible for providing water for drinking and for irrigation to the community of approximately 160 properties in Canyon. It was established in 1958 to serve this traditionally farming community and has seen substantial change over the past 50 years. A large number of residents are retirees who have chosen to live in the beauty and tranquility of the small community lying to the west of the Skimmerhorn range of the Purcells. more...
The current water supply comes from an aquifer in the mountains and provides the community with pristine water. The pressure on that supply is high. Farming has evolved over the past 10 years with a significant movement from apple to cherry orchards. This has had a significant impact upon the water usage pattern and the North Canyon Improvement District trustees are actively involved in developing a long term strategy to ensure demand and supply are managed effectively. Community involvement is central to this effort and hence the importance of the North Canyon Improvement District website presence.

AGM Notes
"The Annual General Meeting of the North Canyon Improvement District was held in the gymnasium of Canyon Elementary School on the evening of April 12, 2010. Minutes of the meeting will be forthcoming.
Two new trustees were elected as trustees for 3 year terms - Caroline Hill and Michael Bachynski. The new Board of Trustees consists of Randy Moore, Morris Widdish, Michael Byrne, Caroline Hill, Michael Bachynski.
The first meeting of the new Board of Trustees will be held on May 11 at 7pm. Location to be determined."
"The Board would like to express its appreciation to the members of the previous Board of trustees - especially Mr. Tony Aryan who served for multiple terms as Chairperson. All trustees volunteer their time for the benefit of our community and his efforts over several years should be recognized and applauded. Without such people the Board would not exist."
Hello to the Canyon Farm Community:
The NCID invites you, the farmer to attend a special “Irrigation Water Users” meeting. The meeting will be held at the Canyon School library at 7.00 P.M. on February 4th, 2010. North Canyon Trustees and some members of the water management task force will also attend. Specifically, we would like to discuss water conservation measures to avoid radical depletion of our aquifer. At the end of the meeting we aim to have a proposal for water conservation which all parties can live with.
Earlier in 2009 a “Water Management Task Force” (WMTF) was charged with evaluating the water usage within North Canyon, both domestic and agricultural. One element of the resulting recommendations centered on restricting water usage.
When the study with the attendant recommendations was presented to the NCID some trustees felt that the restrictions would prove disastrous to the farmers relying on irrigation water. The water restriction element of the WMTF report was deemed unacceptable and we now ask you, as dedicated farmers to attend, discuss and participate in developing a conservation and restriction policy resulting in compliance through compromise.
The aim of this meeting is to make decisions. Given that we have perhaps 3 hours this will be no mean feat.
To that end we will provide you with the following before the meeting:
1.
A summary of the history and state of the water supply
2.
A summary of the document produced by the WMTF.
For your part you should summarize your irrigation practices and minimum needs and be prepared to share with the rest of the meeting.
We will then identify possible compromises – based on the needs of neighbours e.g. when your needs are heavy perhaps others will relinquish their demand so in exchange for reciprocal adjustments.
This will be formulated into a conservation/restriction policy to be applied during the months of May to September.
To be a part of the solution it is imperative that you attend this meeting.
