Good News
from the School!
School awarded 2.354 teachers!
Enrollment is so much higher now that the school board has had to call for another full time position to help our overworked teacher, Mrs. Allred.  The new fulltime teacher’s name is Caroline Proud & the part time teacher is Shelley Morris.  Good news that the fear of losing our school is gone for another year!

My long time friend Chris Luke, Chief of the Lower Kootenay Band talked to me about the origin of the name Yahk.
He explained that it is a corruption of “yanma’nam” meaning, ‘where waters or roads come together, then separate - the middle point of three different directions.
Yahk was the place where the Kootenay people from what is now Bonners Ferry, would meet with those from the areas now known as Creston and Cranbrook’.
We need to remember that the history of Yahk includes those early people who met in this place for centuries and held the land in respect.

Yahk Sign
I imagine you have all seen the signs on either side of Yahk.  These signs were made and erected with volunteer help.  Any expenses were met by the Yahk/Kingsgate Rec. Society.  These signs will soon find a permanent place along side the highway.  Approval has been met by the government department responsible for signs along the highway.  The foreman of Mainroads, Glenn Wesche has offered to help get them into their permanent homes.
Thanks goes to Don Russett, Don Brady, Cathy Dalton, & Glenn Wesche.
A big thank you goes to all who attend the functions and fund raisers we have in our community hall.  Without your attendance, these events would not generate the funds needed to help the Rec Society put on the events and to finance things like new signs.
Thank you everyone!!!! See you at our next event at the Hall!!!!

Our next functions will be the Town Hall Meeting, Nov.21, then Dec. 2 will the Craft Fair, Dec. 12 will a General Meeting of the Rec. Society, then the Christmas Concert Dec. 20.  Also don’t forget Breathe and Stretch with Vera Hohl every Monday morning and on Friday afternoons , and then there’s Seniors Wednesdays…
It’s all  happening in Yahk!!!

Fall Fair 2006
Even though the weather was quite cold and wet we still had a nice turnout of participants and customers.  We were down this year with the amount of entries, 157 entries compared to over 200 last year, but some of our ever faithful participants this year were unable to enter due to unforeseen circumstances.  Hopefully next year things will change and we will see some  of them back again.  We had a some new people entering this year for the first time and a lot of them went home with some very unexpected ribbons.  We hope they will enter again next year and encourage even more to enter.  Without all these dedicated people, old and new, young and not so young, we would not have Fall Fair.  Thank you each and everyone of you.  We are proud of you!  Keep it up!
Our scarecrow contest generated some interest this year.  The Yahk-Kingsgate Recreation Society Board members challenged our local Fire /Department and Yahk-Kingsgate Senior Citizens to make a scarecrow and enter it.  Both groups rallied to the challenge, with the Fire Department taking first prize with their VERY UGLY firefighter scarecrow.  I’m sure none of our firefighters look that bad on even their worst day!  Great work!  The Senior Citizens came in second with their very tired looking old farmer complete with potato digging fork and bent over posture.  I dare anything to try to steal some corn from his garden!  The YKRS Board’s scarecrow came in third with a rather unique looking individual with some very interesting stuffing, a little of this and a little of that.  Hopefully he didn’t have a brain to worry to about what he really was made up of.  Good work to the dedicated worker who saw it through!  We had a tree with branches and face on the trunk that would make anyone think twice before entering the woods or garden, if you encountered that scarecrow tree.  Watch those Pritchard Boys!  The friendly clown made by Barb Nelson was anything but scary, but he sure made you smile at his feet that fell off or turned around and went in the opposite direction.  That would definitely confuse the crows!  Good thinking Barb!
Last but definitely not the least, was the old lady who bent over and scowled at everyone in her path.  Her weathered old face looked like
More coming soon with pictures of events!
